Basic knowledge of leather

Updated June 8, 2024

In modern life, leather has become an indispensable material, widely used in a variety of daily items. Do you know what leather is? Let The Lederer introduce you to the basics of leather.

The difference between leather and skin

  • Hide : refers to the skin of an animal. The untreated animal skin is called "hide." For example, cowhide and pigskin can be used as food and further processed into leather.
  • Leather : refers to leather that has been processed to have special effects such as anti-corrosion and dyeing, and becomes the raw material for making other objects such as belts, handbags and wallets.

Know and understand leather

The Lederer has over 30 years of experience in local tanning. The analysis and understanding of leather is at the core of our work. The following are two important elements:

  1. Leather raw material sources : Leather primarily comes from animals such as cattle, pigs, and sheep, whose hides are a byproduct of animal husbandry. Cowhide hide, due to its abundance, fine texture, and durability, is the primary material for leather shoes, handbags, and clothing.
  2. Leather processing methods : Different processing methods determine the quality and use of leather. Common leather processing methods include tanning, which makes the leather anti-corrosive and soft.

Compared with cowhide, the less produced ones include horsehide, deerskin, kangaroo skin, etc.Japanese CordovanEspecially popular with leather lovers.

There are also some special leathers, such as snake skin, lizard skin, crocodile skin, manta ray skin and so on.

Genuine leather and imitation leather

  • Genuine leather : Natural animal hide that has been chemically treated. Genuine leather is divided into top-grain, split-grain, and composite leather. Top-grain leather has the finest fiber structure, the best durability and breathability, and therefore the highest value. Top-grain leather retains its natural grain and scars, and its value is determined by the surface perfection of the leather.
  • Imitation leather : It is artificial leather, mainly made of PU and PVC, and imitates the texture and appearance of natural leather. Although modern technology can produce imitation leather similar to real leather, its feel and elasticity are still not as good as real leather.

Common leather types

In addition to the common cowhide and pigskin, there are less common leathers such as horsehide, deerskin and kangaroo leather, which are also very popular among leather lovers. In addition, there are some special leathers such as snakeskin, lizard skin, crocodile skin and manta ray skin.
