Ambition Boosted by a 'Rich' Body

A "robust" spirit inspires ambition and the transformation of sunset industries opens up new paths

The years have not only left no one behind, but have also caused many traditional industries to shrink. For example, the Rui Hing Leather Factory, which has a history of more than 30 years, was famous in the 1980s and 1990s. Unfortunately, the leather manufacturing industry has become a sunset industry in Hong Kong today. Kean is the third generation successor of Ruixing Leather Factory. When he took over, it was definitely not that "grandfather had plenty left" for him to play with, but even his father wanted to end this declining family business. But Kean, who grew up in a leather factory, was tainted with a stubborn "cow temper" and didn't want the leather factory to end. But always in Hong Kong, the production of leather is no longer a way to make money, the only thing to do is change, Kean's survival trick is not to rely on price reduction in the market, but to produce tree paste bark, while creating its own brand, opening up product sales channels. He, who was born in the 1990s, is ambitious and strives to break the curse of "not being rich for three generations".

About the interviewee:

Kean Bai, third-generation successor of Ruixing Leather Factory and founder of The Lederer

Kean started helping out at his family’s leather factory when he was in his 10s, and instead of spoiling the leather factory, which was classified as a polluting industry, he fostered a deep affection instead. In 2014, when he returned from studying abroad, he saw that the leather manufacturing industry in Hong Kong was bleak and the turnover of leather factories was constantly declining. He had to choose between doing and not doing. He chose the former, firstly to protect the family business, and secondly, he did not want his parents to face the closure of the leather factory and become idle. Men's things really change, Kean gradually brought change to the leather factory, and founded his own brand The Lederer. He believes that by hard work and knowing how to make good use of his family's network of contacts in the leather industry, he can not only bring the leather factory business back to life, but also continue the leather manufacturing industry in Hong Kong.
